AE Favourite Character

Each day or something, a staff member of AfterElton picks a couple of their favourite characters and Dennis there picked Kevin Walker as one of his favourites. Here's a write up ...

2. Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys), Brothers & Sisters

I recappedthe first couple seasons of Brothers and Sisters here on AfterElton, and I eventually got burned out on the series. But I'll be forever thankful to creator Jon Robin Baitz for giving us the first fully formed and realistic gay male character on broadcast television. There had been gay characters prior to Kevin, sure, but on broadcast TV at least they were either sanitized one-note characters, surreal comic creations or sad and noble victims struggling with their sexual orientation. Kevin Walker on the other hand was nobody's victim, and for the most part his orientation was a non-issue.

Favorite moment? In the fourth episode of season 1, Kevin and brothers Justin and Tommy observe kids roughhousing at a family get-together. One of the kids is in trouble for holding the other kid down and spitting on him, prompting Kevin to ruminate: “They're just too young to appreciate the pleasures of spitting in someone's mouth.”

It's nice to know that less than a year on Brothers And Sisters/Kevin Walker/Matthew Rhys still gets some love from the site.

Happy Birthday Matthew Rhys

Happy 37th birthday Matthew Rhys. Will be getting Season 5 of Brothers And Sisters this month.

Meanwhile both Sheridan Smith and Andrew Scott will be in The Scapegoat, which begins filming this month along with Matthew and Dame Eileen Atkins. April 2012 will be interesting for that alone.
